In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You need to be able to hop between game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time trouble since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this case!
