In exceptionally general terms, there are three general tactics used. You want to be able to hop between game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to achieve, to lock in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your chances. The strongest places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other spare pieces to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
