In exceptionally general terms, there are three general tactics used. You must be able to hop between strategies quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious trouble taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The best areas for anchors are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
