In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three main game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
