In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 general plans employed. You want to be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opponent is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
