In very simple terms, there are three chief techniques used. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this case!
