In astonishingly simple terms, there are three main tactics used. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious trouble due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
