In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic techniques used. You need to be able to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
