In very general terms, there are three general strategies employed. You want to be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is now in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: after all, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
