In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief tactics used. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time calamity because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
