In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three general tactics used. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
