In extraordinarily general terms, there are three basic strategies employed. You need to be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious trouble because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The best places for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
